The New City Hall Development Project – Historic Guy Town Archeological Survey and Testing Investigation

by admin last modified 2006-02-02 07:50 AM

The project involved historical research, documentation and assessment of cultural resources, archeological survey, and testing investigations for five city blocks in Austin, prior to the New City Hall Development Project. The project area was the site of a nineteenth century red light district known as Guy Town, populated by bars brothels and gambling establishments. The project included HABS documentation of existing historic commercial buildings in the project area prior to demolition in addition to archeological work. For over two years Hicks & Company worked closely with City officials and state regulatory leaders, developing innovative strategies for archeological identification, collection, and analysis. In 2003, following publication of the final two-volume report, Hicks & Company won the Texas Historical Commission’s award of Merit for Archeological Research and Reporting.
