Texas history is coming to life in a small East Texas town as Fort Anahuac, an 1830s Mexican fort and site of an early skirmish leading to the Texas Revolution, undergoes the early stages of an ambitious archeological investigation.

Beginning in 2000, the true story of Fort Anahuac began to unfold as Chambers County requested a non-invasive magnetometer survey of the fort. The Texas Historical Commission, under the direction of Dr. Jim Bruseth, conducted the survey and found that a significant portion of the fort was still buried. The data needed to be confirmed however through actual archeological testing. Chambers County requested funding for an archeological study by applying for the Texas Preservation Trust Fund Grant.

A Texas Historical Commission researcher guides the Magnetometer across the site.

The resulting magnetometer map. You can see the western bastion and curtain walls on the left side of the picture.
